Academy to follow ‘deliberate, disciplined, transparent’ hiring process for new athletic director

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force Academy is following a "very deliberate, disciplined and transparent federal process" to select the best candidate for the Academy's next athletic director, officials with the Academy's Manpower and Personnel Directorate said Aug. 15.

Dr. Hans Mueh, the current athletic director, will retire in June.

Athletics directors before Mueh were active-duty officers, so the Office of Personnel Management's process for hiring civilians did not apply, said Laurie Carroll, the Academy's manpower and personnel director. The directorate has focused on updating the director's duties and responsibilities, preparing the job announcement and identifying people to serve on the applicant screening and interview panels.

"These initial efforts are critical," Carroll said. "The position description and job announcement capture the qualifications and attributes the Academy is looking for in highly motivated and qualified candidates who will compete for the opportunity to be a key player in executing the Academy's mission to develop leaders of character."

Panel members' backgrounds include demonstrated university, athletic , military or business expertise, notable academic achievement, National Collegiate Athletic Association experience and diversity across gender, ethnicity, alumni status and intercollegiate athlete status, Carroll said.

The salary range for the position is $152,606 to $167,000, and some recruitment or retention incentives may also be available.

The job announcement is posted on the USAJobs website at Applications must be received by Sept. 16.
