Academy aims to cut $5.2 million from travel budget

The Battle of Fair Oaks, Va., is depicted in this painting by Currier and Ives. This item from the Gimbel Collection depicts one of the first balloon flights over Marseilles, France, in 1783. The balloon is named a Montgolfiere after its inventors, French paper makers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier. Its first flight, over Annonay, France, reached an altitude of 6,562 feet.
