U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo --   The Academy gathered in front of the Tuskegee Airmen memorial statue May 8, to honor the sacrifices and service of the first African-American military pilots in the United States armed forces.

Academy Airmen, leaders and friends and family of Tuskegee Airmen attended a wreath-laying ceremony, parade and luncheon here to pay tribute to Tuskegee Airmen who fought for America's freedom during World War II.

By the end of the war, 992 men had graduated from pilot training and 355 were sent overseas for combat, flying fighters on ground attack and bomber escort missions over North Africa and Europe.
