3/21/2013 - U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force Academy's annual Independence Day celebration has been canceled due to budgetary concerns from sequestration, Academy officials announced March 20.

Sequestration has forced the Academy to cut back on many activities it would normally support, said Academy Public Affairs Director Lt. Col. John Bryan.

"Faced with so many uncertainties about the future budget, we have to look at ways to save money," Bryan said. "The City of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region are our family, and we look forward to getting this and other events back on track in 2014."

This marks the second-straight year the Academy has not held a fireworks show to celebrate Independence Day. The 2012 event was canceled due to the Waldo Canyon Fire.

UPDATE (March 22): The Colorado Springs Philharmonic announced it will hold an orchestra performance and fireworks show in a city park, according to a Colorado Springs Gazette article published March 22. Funding for the show, which costs between $80,000 and $100,000, will include $45,000 from the city's Lodgers and Automobile Rental Tax.

"We're so appreciative of everything the Academy has done," Colorado Springs Philharmonic President Nathan Newbrough told the Gazette. "We also understand the pressures are great, and we understand they're not able to participate this year."

The venue will be announced April 9.

This is very sad. Makes about as much sense as canceling White House tours. The Air Force can do better.

USAFA Cadet and Officer Leadership...C'mon if the 4th of July has real meaning -- Be More Creative. The 4th does not mean spending on fireworks food and entertainment. I bet with some thinking the Cadet Wing Academy Staff and local community could have a real joint celebration of what's great about our nation our citizens and our freedoms -- without the

Maybe if the USAF hadn't wasted 350 Million to study an alternate engine for the F-35 they'd have the money. It was a reward to the company that lost the bid. Don't forget the refueling debacle where the Project Manager went to jail. Or the Navy that last summer sent two ships to the scrapyard that had never been commissioned -- 200 Million. Or The Army being forced to buy more M1 Tanks than they say they need. Or the USMC that just issued a contract to buy M1911 cal 45 pistols to replace the 9mm's they bought to replace their M1911 cal 45 pistols.

I suggest you have one and do it the Laura Ingales Wilder way. You should have a picnic lunch with a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Maybe also the Gettysburg Address. Everyone sing the National Anthem. All that dont cost a red cent.

My son is a cadet at West Point - where they have cancelled BREAKFAST - because of the cutbacks. This is not a joke. There is no more hot breakfast at the USMC.

Good. We don't need the government providing this kind of stuff. Government should stick to the basics defense punishing crime and protecting private property. We don't need these other frills. God bless.
