Falcons crush Morgan State 63-7 to open 2015 season Published Sept. 9, 2015 By John Van Winkle U.S. Air Force Academy Public Affairs U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Sixteen Falcons ran the ball for a combined 394 yards during Air Force's 63-7 rout of Morgan State Bears here Sept 5. Falcons' season-opener featured four falcon quarterbacks behind center and a host of players up and down the depth chart getting significant playing time. The Air Force Academy's football brain trust has transitioned its offense from a triple-option attack to multiple formations to maintain the option in their run-heavy arsenal. Their run-heavy offense kept drawing the Morgan State defenders close to the line early on to protect against the run, when Falcon quarterback Nate Romine faded back and hit wide receiver Jalen Robinette for a 26-yard touchdown reception to open the scoring festival. The Falcons' first-stringers would add three more touchdowns in the first half, before Morgan State got on the scoreboards. Quarterback Moses Skillion kept the offense moving by exploiting screen passes to keep the chains moving. He capped the drive with a two-yard dive into the end zone, to score Morgan State's only touchdown of the game. "Any time you play a game it exposes some areas," said Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun. "In every area, we need to make an awful lot of improvement. It exposes some spots when you go out there and play against somebody else where we need to make some strides. "There are some things we did okay and some spots where we played fairly well," Calhoun said. "I thought we struggled against the screens early in the first half. The first half, on third down to a degree, we were not able to get off the field. In that second quarter we got a little bit sloppy and in the second half we played better. There's no doubt if they can get all their guys back they are going to be a squad that wins a good number of games. We have a lot of work to do. We know that." The Falcons ended the game with 84 players on the participation report and scored in every facet of the game. Leading that offensive showcase was senior receiver Garrett Brown, with 180 combined yards. Brown's highlight of the game was a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown with heavy escort by special-teamers Jesse Washington and Tyler Williams. Brown added another 39 yards rushing and 58 yards receiving to the Falcons' 516-yard performance on offense. On defense, Roland Ladipo marked his first game starting at cornerback with an interception return in the third quarter. Ladipo undercut wide receiver Andrew King to take possession of the ball and dashed 22 yards for the Falcons' seventh score of the game and first defensive score of the season. The Falcons' attention now turns to San Jose State. The Falcons host the Spartans Sept. 12 with an 8:15 p.m. (MT) kickoff. The game will be televised on ESPNU and aired locally on KVOR 740 AM.
