The voice of the Academy, KAFA-FM, just got louder thanks to upgrades to the station's webcast site.

The changes to www.kafaradio.webs.com allow KAFA-FM broadcasts to stream virtually anywhere in the world, said station advisor Dave West.

"We reach people all over the U.S. and all around the world, with recent tune-ins from Afghanistan, Canada, Armenia, New Zealand and India, just to name a few," he said. "And, it's in high-quality audio. Unlike other streams, our streaming sounds just like your cd player."

Since the April upgrades, KAFA-FM has seen a spring in ratings; as of Aug. 1, the station ranked in the top-500 of the 5,000 stations using the webcast service provider, West said.

The upgrade allows streamers to view song titles, artist information and recent playlists; and station staff to view listener demographics.

Cadet 3rd Class Krista Kelly, a KAFA-FM cadet DJ, said modern technology allows cadets to share their talent and personality with listeners.

"Being involved in KAFA provides a creative outlet," she said. "We get to make the station our own and keep the community linked into the happenings here at the Academy."

Cadet 3rd Class Alex Lee, also a cadet DJ, said working at the station has improved his social media and public speaking skills, and given him the chance to interview San Antonio Spurs head coach Greg Popovich and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III.

KAFA-FM follows a mostly modern rock format, but web streamers can also listen to unique Academy programing including "Blinded by Science," hosted by Academy physics instructor Capt. Nate Sorenson, and "Character Matters," hosted by retired Chief Master Sgt. Bob Vasquez.

The Association of Graduates has sponsored KAFA-FM webcasts and updates since its first webcast in May 2008.
