WASHINGTON — One-hundred-fifty-one years ago, citizens gathered at Arlington National Cemetery to honor Civil War soldiers as part of the inaugural Decoration Day. Today, the citizenry of this great nation know this observance as Memorial Day. We actively reflect on the sacrifice made by our Airmen, Coast Guards, Marines, sailors and soldiers who gave their last full measure of devotion for our liberty.

As we remember the guardians of our past, we also express deep gratitude to the 685,000 military and civilian Airmen embodying integrity, service before self and excellence, that over-watch our nation’s freedom today.

This Memorial Day, renew your commitment to the fallen and their families that survived them. Remember our wounded warrior families, ever mindful of the observable and invisible wounds our veterans shoulder, as well. Let us walk through this Memorial Day weekend at all times ready to share in both the joys and adversities of life as we remember their service and sacrifice.

It is an honor to serve with you.

Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson, Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David Goldfein, and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth Wright.
