Special collection a window on aviation history

The Battle of Fair Oaks, Va., is depicted in this painting by Currier and Ives. In the upper left is the Intrepid, one of seven balloons used by the Union Army Balloon Corps for intelligence and reconnaissance purposes. The balloon is credited with saving Union Army Gen. Samuel Heintzelman's army from defeat in the battle, which took place May 31, 1862. (U.S. Air Force photo)
