Special collection a window on aviation history
This item from the Gimbel Collection depicts one of the first balloon flights over Marseilles, France, in 1783. The balloon is named a Montgolfiere after its inventors, French paper makers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier. Its first flight, over Annonay, France, reached an altitude of 6,562 feet.
