U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Team USAFA:
As another election cycle comes to a close, we are reminded just how dearly our nation values the democracy we live under. In many ways, we have come to expect the peaceful transition of power in America. Our Constitution, the "idea" to which we swear allegiance, is resilient. For so many around the world it's simply not the norm. Millions of brave Americans have fought and died to protect our democratic process. And even though our differences seem to be highlighted during an election, there are constant reminders of our unity.
One such reminder is Veteran's Day when, as a nation, we collectively pause to honor those who serve and those who have served -- even to the point of giving the last full measure of devotion to our country. Veterans Day reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy come at a great cost, and no one knows that better than those in uniform. Though Veteran's Day often conjures images of the heroes who fought in wars past, it is equally a reminder that we now carry the weight of responsibility that comes with the honor of being deemed a veteran.
Our daily duties at USAFA might not seem so near to the sound of the guns, so to speak; yet, we're investing every day in the people, the ideas, inventions and skills, that will face the challenges in harm's way. I'm proud to serve alongside you -- because you know the burden is heavy, and still you stand ready.
This Veteran's Day I hope you will remember veterans past and present, and consider what it means when America makes this remembrance a national priority and what it means to be an American and an American Airman, living our core values, confident in our convictions, yet respectful of our differences.
Thank you for all you do day after day -- your service is not only inspiring to me, but to our nation!
