Firefighters here returned from Hanover Feb. 27 after responding to the Milne fire near Peyton Highway.

According to reports, about 5,000 acres were blackened by the fire, reported that day.

“Our response is part of our mutual aid agreement with El Paso County,” said Martin Clinton, an assistant fire chief at the 10th Civil Engineer Squadron. “When they need help, they call us. If we need help we call them.”

The 10th CES firefighters kept a 4,500-gallon water truck filled for civilian firefighters.

“We always like to help out, but especially our younger military firefighters," Clinton said. "They're well-trained and really dedicated,” he said.

Senior Airman Trevor Hanson was one of the four 10th CES firefighters.

“Our relationship with off-base agencies and fire departments is very strong,” he said. “We provided resupply operations to three or four different fire departments and Colorado Springs utilities throughout the day.”

Clinton said the fire was contained Feb 28.

“They’re checking out the hot spots,” he said. “They’ll monitor is it overnight and make an assessment in the morning.”

Hanover is approximately 30 miles southeast of the Colorado Springs Airport.
