U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force Academy will celebrate Earth Day April 21 with an information booth 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Main Exchange.
Brian Gott, environmental technician with the 10 Civil Engineer Squadron, said the primary focus is to educate Air Force families about greenhouse gases and how they can play a positive role in protecting the environment from global warming and other environmental threats.
Earth Day facts
· The Earth has warmed a significant 1-degree F during the past 100 years
· Global warming is a negative outcome of the greenhouse effect
· As the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it poses problems for humans, plants and animals
· More than 2 million people across the world die prematurely each year due to air pollution
· Two-thirds of the nearly 200 billion beverage containers sold annually in the U.S. are placed in landfills, incinerated or become litter
· Reducing waste by 1-percent each year, and recycling and composting 90-percent of our trash would have the same effect as shutting down 21-percent of coal-fired power plants in the U.S.
· It takes about six weeks for an aluminum can to be sold, recycled and re-manufactured for use
· Recycling saves three-to-five times the energy waste-incinerator power plants generate
· Recycling and re-manufacturing account for 3.1 million jobs in the U.S.
· Earth Day was founded by Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisconsin) April 22, 1970
