U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force Academy will celebrate Arbor Day, 9:30-11:15 a.m., April 26 at Douglass Valley Elementary School.
The event is planned to include tree planting, a ceremony recognizing the Academy as a “Tree City USA" member, an appearance by Smokey the Bear, and more.
“We look forward to this every year and believe it is beneficial that, this year, we will plant new trees close to the school where the kids can watch and care for them,” said Joe Murphy, the Forester and Wildland Fire Program manager at 10 Civil Engineer Squadron.
The event kicks off with the reading of “The Giving Tree.” Andy Schlosberg, the Colorado State Forest Service assistant district forester, will officially recognize the Academy as a Tree City USA community.
The Academy qualifies for the "Tree City" designation by meeting the four standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department; having a community tree ordinance; spending at least $2 per-person on urban forestry; and celebrating Arbor Day
Following the presentation, Smokey the Bear will share the importance of protecting trees and what those at the event can do to protect the Earth.
