Staff and their families at the Air Force Academy can sign-up to receive free deer and elk meat, 6:30 a.m., Aug. 1, at the Natural Resources Office.

Signups for the Salvage List are free and on a first come-first served basis. One signup is allowed for each family represented by the first 30 people in the sign-up line.

"When an elk or deer is struck on base, the 10th Security Forces Squadron calls a person on the Salvage List to pick up the animal," said Natural Resources manager Brian Mihlbachler. "Most strikes occur from dusk to dawn, but can occur any time. They happen base-wide, even in the housing areas where the speed limit is 25 mph."

So far this year, 13 deer or Elk have collided with vehicles on base.

"There are on average 20-to-30 deer strikes per year," Milhbachler said. "Attentive driving can reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of hitting an animal."

Milhbachler said the Salvage list benefits the Academy and Academy families.

A Road Kill Wildlife Possession permit must be obtained from the 10th CES Natural Resources office within 48 hours of possessing the animal.
