The Air Force Academy will host this year’s annual National Flying Association, Region 1, competition, Oct. 7-14.

Along with the Academy, five colleges and universities will compete: Metropolitan State University, Utah State University, Westminster College, Colorado Northwestern Community College, and Rocky Mountain College.

The competition consists of ground events and flight events. Ground events tests the contestant’s knowledge of FAA flight rules, aircraft identification and cross country flight planning. In the air, contestants compete in flight navigation, aircraft landing and message drop.

Types of aircraft to be flown include general aviation single engine aircraft.

Competition aircraft will fly an FAA-standard pattern, keeping the aircraft closer to the runway.  Aircraft will land and take off from the Academy's airfield.
