Warrior Games 2013: Air Force wins 11 medals in track and field competition

Air Force athletes took home one gold, four silver and six bronze medals in the Warrior Games 2013 Track and Field competition at the Academy's Outdoor Track Stadium May 14.

Staff Sgt. Lara Ishikawa took first place in the Women's 100 Meter Open Relay, winning the Air Force's gold medal for the day.

Second-place winners included: Ishikawa in the Women's 200 Meter Open Relay, Chief Master Sgt. Damian Orslene in Men's Discus (other seated), Master Sgt. Shawn Schwantes in the Men's 1500-meter Open Relay and retired Senior Airman Scott Palomino in the Men's 1500-meter Relay Below the Knee (single and double).

Third-place winners included: Tech. Sgt. Monica Figueroa in Women's Shot Put (open), Figueroa in Women's Discus, Tech. Sgt. Kevin Murphy in Men's Shot Put (open), Staff Sgt. Jason Caswell in Men's Shot Put (other ambulatory), Orslene in Men's Shot Put (other seated) and Caswell in Men's Discus (other ambulatory).

Aleah Dayton, from Salem, Ore. has attended the games for the past three years to support her husband, Mike Dayton, who competed in the 4x100-meter relay.

"I love the Warrior Games because of the camaraderie," Dayton said. "Everyone supports each other. When my husband competes here, he doesn't have to try and hide who he is (wounded warrior), he can embrace it."
