The inaugural 1st Lt. Roslyn L. Schulte Cadet Awards and Recognition Ceremony will be held at the Academy's McDermott Library May 25, at 11:30 a.m.

The award commemorates the life and career of Lieutenant Schulte, who was killed outside Kabul, Afghanistan, when the vehicle in which she was traveling was hit by a roadside bomb.

Lieutenant Schulte graduated from the Academy in 2006, and was commissioned as an intelligence officer. Assigned to Pacific Air Forces' Directorate of Intelligence at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, she volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan in February 2009, where she trained Afghan National Army soldiers in intelligence operations.

The only female Academy graduate to be killed in the Global War on Terrorism, Lieutenant Schulte was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. She also posthumously received a National Intelligence Medal for Valor for her efforts to teach Afghan military officials how to gather and interpret military intelligence.

Two buildings near Kabul were renamed in Lieutenant Schulte's honor May 20, 2010. At Camp Eggers, one of the buildings is now designated at "Roz's House"; and at Sia Sang, a second building was named "Schulte's Place." Both buildings are occupied by members of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan CJ2 Directorate.

The 1st Lt. Roslyn Schulte Cadet Award, endowed by Lieutenant Schulte's parents and friends to honor her memory, will be presented to a first-class cadet who, according to the award ceremony's program, "embodies the same impeccable character, unwavering leadership, and spirit of service that distinguished Lieutenant Schulte." At the May 25 ceremony, the award winner will be selected from a list of 11 nominees.
