Air Force senior Tom Whitney was named the Mountain West Conference Men's Co-Golfer of the Month for September, as announced Oct. 1 by the conference office.

Whitney, a native of La Quinta, Calif., shares the honor -- the second of his career -- with University of Nevada-Las Vegas sophomore Derek Ernst.

Whitney recorded a pair of top-three finishes in his first two events of the season, tying for third place at both the William H. Tucker Invitational and the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. At the Tucker Invitational, Whitney shot a 6-under-par 210, while carding a 5-under-par 211 at the Falcon Invitational. At the Falcon Invitational, Whitney helped Air Force to a team score of 866 (+2), which is the seventh-lowest tournament total in program history.

In the first month of the season, Whitney shot at par or below in five of six rounds, and ranks second in the league with a 70.2 stroke average. He has now fired a 212 or lower 11 times in his career, more than any other player in school history.

Whitney and the rest of the Falcons will be in action Oct. 5-6 as they head to Andrews AFB, Md., for the Service Academy Golf Classic, which returns after a two-year hiatus. Air Force has dominated at the SAGC, winning the last 12 titles in the 14-year history of the event. Whitney captured medalist honors at the last SAGC, held in 2006.
