Baseball: Falcons wrap up season with loss vs. New Mexico

Air Force dropped a 19-6 Mountain West Conference baseball game to New Mexico Saturday at Falcon Field ending the season with a 14-37, 3-18 record, while the Lobos improved to 37-18, 15-8. 

New Mexico plated runs in eight of nine innings and racked up 24 hits on the day. The Lobos broke open a 9-6 ballgame with eight runs in the eighth inning. Brian Cavazos-Galvez did most of the damage, going 5-for-5 with three homers, six runs and four RBIs. Seven Lobos notched multiple hits in the game. 

Air Force had nine hits in game. Nathan Carter and Ben Ausbun led the way with two hits each. Jack Lupo added a triple and two RBIs. 

New Mexico reliever Daniel Grubbs (3-1) picked up the win with three innings pitched. Lobo starter Edwin Carl pitched three innings, allowing two runs off four hits. 

Air Force starter Jake Petro (3-5) took the loss in his final career start. Petro struck out five in three innings pitched. The Falcons used seven relievers in the game. Jason Griggs, Adam Teach, Evan Abrecht, Michael Ceci, Michael Ruvolo, Andrew Loyd and Aaron Kurcz pitch in relief. Kurcz struck out four in 1.2 innings pitched.

New Mexico jumped ahead 5-0 when the Falcons plated two runs in the third to make it a 5-2 game. After trading runs in the fourth, New Mexico scored two in the top of the fifth to go up 8-3. Air Force rallied back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 8-6 game. 

UNM then scored a run in the seventh and exploded for eight runs in the eighth. The Lobos then tacked on two more runs in the ninth. 

Prior to the game, Air Force honored its four members from the Class of 2009: Casey Allen, Jason Griggs, Jake Petro and Adam Teach.
