Reducing water pollution at the Academy Published Aug. 12, 2015 By Aslie Steel U.S. Air Force Academy Public Affairs U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo -- Air Force Academy staff, their families and cadets can reduce water pollution by taking a few simple steps, said a water quality official at the base. Colorado gets more than 16 inches of rainfall annually, leading to surface run-off which can pollute streams, lakes and drinking water, said Dan Follett, the 10th Civil Engineer Squadron's water quality environmental manager. Follett said this run-off can contain oils, lubricants and other pollutants that can impact drinking water and increase sediment in streams and damage habitats for fish and other aquatic life. Tips to reduce water pollution · Minimize the use of fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides during yard work · Use designated waste containers with a secure lid · Pick up trash on and off base · Recycle. The Academy's recycle containers are located near the Commissary and Base Exchange. · Dispose of oil, paint, antifreeze, etc. at the El Paso County Hazardous Waste Drop-off site at 3255 Akers Drive, Colorado Springs. Call 520-7871 for more information. · Don't wash or work on your vehicle at home. Use the Academy's Auto Hobby Shop. Call 333-8367 for more information.
