The 10th Force Support Squadron's Outdoor Recreational Center staff has scheduled more than 200 outdoor events in August for Academy families, Airmen and cadets.

While the ORC's most popular activities are rafting and hiking, the center has planned a variety of activities for Academy customers including camping, kayaking and an adult CPR class, said ORC director Charles Alfultis.

"We've scheduled white water rafting trips to the Royal Gorge and Bighorn Sheep Canyon on Saturdays and Sundays in August," he said. "There are also biking trips planned in Glenwood Springs Canyon and on the Santa Fe Trail and Gold Camp Road.  We've also sponsored a camping trip to Curt Gowdy State Park in Wyoming on August 23. It's a great location with an opportunity for water sports and rock climbing."

The ORC also offers guided hikes 9 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Academy.

"There are multiple trails here including Falcon Trail, Sante Fe Trail, Stanley Canyon and Eagle's Peak Trail," Alfultis said.

The ORC has designed many events specifically for single Airmen, including trips to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park.

"They can zipline 1,250 feet above the canyon floor or take advantage of the park's other amenities," he said. "We try to sponsor a lot of adrenaline-type activities for single Airmen. Single Airmen of any rank can participate."

The Air Force recently announced the Recharge for Resiliency program to help Airmen and their families cope with the post-deployment process, Alfultis said.

"Airmen and their families can take part in the program after their sponsor is away for 30 or more days or upon return from their deployment."

According to an Academy policy set in place in January, anyone using the base's recreational trails must be with at least one other person.
