Demons Squadron comes out on top at Field Day Published July 22, 2015 By Ray Bowden U.S. Air Force Academy Public Affairs U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Demons Squadron came out on top at the Air Force Academy's Field Day, an annual event that tests the teamwork and athletic skills of basic cadets, July 10. The competitive activity marked the halfway point of Basic Cadet Training for more than 1,000 basic cadets and featured a long distance run, tug-of-war and other relays. The Demons Squadron cadets won't find BCT any easier because of their win, but they do receive recognition in the form of bragging rights and a streamer they can attach to their squadron Guidon, said Maj. Marcus Durham, the deputy director of the Cadet Wing's athletic programs. "Field Day brings teamwork to another level," Durham said. "It takes the strides basic cadets have made as individuals and challenges them to perform together in a bigger organization for a larger objective. They must also be able to analyze individuals' strengths and weaknesses to form the best teams for each event." Field Day marks a brief reprieve for the day-to-day grind of BCT, Durham said. "Being largely cut off from the outside world, it is easy for cadets to feel as if BCT will never end," he said. "By pausing at the halfway point, they can start to see the big picture, the glideslope they're on that will take them through to Acceptance Day, and ultimately their recognition as cadets." Field Day is organized by cadets, Durham said. "It challenges the cadet staff to plan and execute a massive event featuring 1,250 basic cadets in front of all of their Academy leadership. The bottom line is that Field Day is a development challenge for all cadets from inception to completion." Basic Cadet Training ends August 1.
