Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), the ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, was appointed to the Air Force Academy Board of Visitors May 18.

The BOV provides Congress and the defense secretary with advice concerning the morale, discipline, curriculum and social climate at the Academy.

"The outstanding men and women who comprise the cadet wing at the Air Force Academy represent some of our nation's best and brightest," Hirono said in a news release. "I am honored to accept this appointment to the Academy's BOV and stand ready to work with my board colleagues and (Academy superintendent) Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson to ensure the Academy provides the best possible education and training for our next generation of leaders."

The BOV has 15 members, with six appointed by the president, four by the speaker of the house, three by the vice president and three by the House Armed Services Committee chairman.

Hirono also serves on the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee and Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
