Academy supt. inducted into Colo. Sports Hall of Fame

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. --  Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson, Academy Superintendent, was inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 Oct. 28 at the Broadmoor World Arena, Colorado Springs.

Among her athletic accomplishments, she's the second all-time leading scorer in women's basketball here.

Averaging 17.6 points a game, the general ended her basketball career with 1,706 points, the second most accrued points in women's basketball history here.

"I am extremely honored to receive this induction," General Johnson said. "There are many incredible opportunities for every Academy cadet to immerse themselves in, opportunities that foster leadership, discipline and camaraderie, and enhance our cadets' drive and determination to do the right thing and be a team player. One of the immersions I was able take advantage of was our athletic programs."

General Johnson said it would be impossible for her to sum up the positive lessons she learned as an Academy athlete.

"It was an incredible experience and absolutely integral in my development as a leader and an officer," she said. "It is part of the very foundation allowing me to continue to serve as an American Airman and as superintendent of the Air Force's Academy. Whether a cadet is an athlete or develops their talents in other arenas here, our programs develop the grit and determination cadets need to succeed as officers and leaders of our tremendous Air Force."

General Johnson was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic Hall of Fame for her on- and- off- the court abilities in 1995 and is a member of the Air Force Sports Hall of Fame's inaugural class.

Inaugural Hall of Fame nominees must be Academic All-Americans with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and be at least 10 years past graduation.

The general was also named the Academy's most outstanding scholar-athlete in 1981, maintained a 3.91 GPA during her cadet career, and is a two-time academic all-American. She's the Academy woman to be a Rhodes Scholar and earned her pilot wings in 1984.

General Johnson held numerous Air Force command positions during her career.
Before becoming Academy superintendent, she was the deputy chief of staff of Operation and Intelligence for Supreme Headquarters Allies Powers Europe, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Belgium.
