The Air Force Academy's Manpower and Personnel Directorate released Air Force specialty code classifications Sept. 16 for cadets who were selected to enter the rated career fields of pilot, combat systems officer, air battle manager or remotely piloted aircraft pilot.

Approximately 94 percent of the 432 seniors who volunteered for rated duty received their first choice of rated AFSC, Manpower and Personnel Director Laurie Carroll said.

A total of 404 cadets received rated AFSCs: 369 were selected to become pilots, 18 to become RPA pilots, 11 to become combat systems officers and six to become air battle managers.

Under an AFSC selection process implemented earlier this year, a cadet who volunteers to be considered for a pilot position can also be considered for other rated positions. That "all-in" process is already in place for Air Force ROTC cadets, Manpower and Personnel Director Laurie Carroll said in March.

"By volunteering for one (rated AFSC), a cadet is in for all four," Carroll said. "However, once cadets are matched to a rated AFSC, they are given an opportunity to opt out if they don't desire that rated AFSC. If they do opt out, they will be classified into a non-rated AFSC with their classmates who selected non-rated preferences."

Cadets who opted out of their rated AFSC classification will be ineligible for rated consideration until after graduation, Carroll said. Cadets who opted out of their rated AFSC and cadets who originally chose a non-rated AFSC began meeting the Air Force Personnel Center's central non-rated AFSC classification board Sept. 30.

The 404 cadets selected from the current class of 858 represent roughly 47 percent of the senior class. Historically, approximately 50 percent of graduating cadets enter rated career fields.
