Hundreds of Academy cadets and more than a dozen Airmen assigned here volunteered their time to support about 30 local community organizations Sept. 12-13.

About 500 upper-class cadets from here served at the Care and Share Food Bank, the Colorado Springs Therapeutic Riding Center, the Dream Power Animal Rescue Foundation and other community organizations in or around Colorado Springs Sept. 12.
About 60 cadets and nearly 20 Airmen rallied around Black Forest and Woodland Park for fire and flood mitigation Sept. 13.

In Black Forest, the 10th Medical Operations Squadron Airmen jumpstarted vegetation growth in the blackened area by planting native seed and building structures to prevent soil loss and erosion.

In Woodland Park, 60 cadets assigned to Cadet Squadron 1 gathered around the Ranch Estates community to cut trees in the urban-woodland interface and provide firewood for needy homes.

Cadets performed more than 30,000 hours of community service during the 2013-2014 academic years. Their efforts are organized by the Academy's Center for Character and Leadership Development center via its Cadet Service Leadership program, designed to
connect community organizations with cadet volunteers.
