Lt. Col. Troy Harting has been nominated as permanent professor of the Academy's department of management.

Congress will confirm the nomination in July.

Harting, a 1993 Academy graduate, brings academic experience from the fields of Philosophy, Management and Business Administration. As a permanent professor, his responsibility will include serving as the department head for the department of management.

"I am excited and humbled by this great opportunity," Harting said. "As a management major myself, I feel very privileged to be selected to continue the great legacy of the department."
The position provides the leadership, strategic direction, organizational stability, and long-term academic program continuity required by the senior faculty.

Presently, he serves as the director of the Dean's Commander's Action Group.

Harting is a native of Baltimore but raised in Fallston, Md. He lives in Colorado Springs with his wife Dana and daughter Allie, 9.

"I never thought I'd be in this position," he said. "I remember sitting in then-Col. Jim Woody's Management 482 Investments class, thinking 'Man, what a pretty cool gig that would be, to be the head of the Management Department."

Retired Brig. Gen. Woody is the Management Department's first permanent professor Management after the department split from Economy, Geography and Management Department.

"He's still in the area and I often chat with him at the cadet gym," Harting said. "Interesting to now be in charge of the department where I majored. The culture back then was very supportive and cadet-centric, and that hasn't changed in the 24 years since I first became involved with DFM. It's great to be part of, and continue, that legacy."

He was recently awarded the Outstanding Academy Educator for USAFA's Department of Management in 2013.
