A program analyst with the 10th Medical Support Squadron here received the Air Force Medical Service's Civilian Leadership Award, the Air Force Surgeon General's Office announced Jan. 31.

Kristy Viera received the award for her software engineering work for a medical flight screening database that cut the processing time for cadets' physicals in half and for forecasting the financial and workload impact of last summer's scheduled civilian furlough on the Air Force Academy Clinic's ability to provide services.

Viera aided a surgery sharing agreement between the Air Force and Department of Veterans Affairs and helped the Defense Health Agency save nearly $200,000 in private sector care through her analysis of a Defense Department-VA sleep lab study.

Viera built the Colorado Springs Military Health System's Joint Refill Center volume model, saving military pharmacies in Colorado Springs $3.3 million in fiscal year 2013, according to her award nomination.

Her supervisors called her market value report, which detailed more than $500 million toward multi-service market delivery, a "model for the Defense Health Agency." Michael Love, the squadron's chief of business analysis, said her leadership of training programs has led to the 10th Medical Group being rated number one among AFMS specialty clinics and surgery centers.

"She has a passion for the mission of the United States Air Force Academy," Love said. "Whether in her role as the (Medical Expense and Performance Reporting System) program manager or volunteering in multiple capacities, she is a proven leader and trainer and an outstanding Airman."
