For the 27th year in a row, Air Force Academy cadets have won the Region 1 National Intercollegiate Flying Association competition.

The cadets won first place in nine events, including being named overall flying event champs.

"Not only did the team demonstrate precision flying skills, it represented the Air Force through sportsmanship and professionalism," said Cadet 1st Class Stewart Harlow, flying team commander.

The Academy's Flying Team consists of 25 cadets who compete in regional and national precision flying contests. The competition includes 11 regions and 75 schools nationally.

The Flying Team provides the opportunity for aviation minded cadets to excel, both in the air and on the ground.

"The team could not be more excited about the upcoming Nationals competition in May," said Harlow. "With three months of preparation to fine tune the skills demonstrated at the Region 1 competition the USAFA Precision Flying Team is striving for a 2014 National Championship."

Bert Boyce, USAFA Flying team coach, said that while the cadets have previously come in second for the national level competition, he's confident this will be their year to win.
