Downtown Denver establishment off-limits after Airman killed

Air Force Academy officials notified base personnel Wednesday that the area near 15th and Market Streets in downtown Denver is off-limits until further notice after one Airman was killed and another was injured there Saturday.

Airman 1st Class Shaquille Hargrove, 19, of Wilson, N.C., was fatally wounded during an incident in that area, according to reports from the 460th Space Wing at Buckley Air Force Base.

The injured Airman, who was not identified, was treated at a Denver hospital and released.

Col. Dan Wright, the 460th SW commander, placed the area off-limits to Armed Forces personnel Sunday allow investigators to conduct a thorough investigation. The order is scheduled to remain in effect until the investigation determines the area to be safe.

"On behalf of myself and Team Buckley, I want to offer my sincerest condolences to the families and friends of those affected by this tragic incident," Wright said. "Our Airmen are our greatest assets ... and we lost a valuable member of Team Buckley this weekend.

"Taking care of our Airmen and families is a top priority, and we're doing all we can to tend to the needs of Airman Hargrove's friends, family and fellow Airmen," Wright added.

Locally established Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Boards advise commanders on matters concerning eliminating conditions that harm the health, safety, welfare, morale and discipline of the Armed Forces. Army Regulation 190-24 governs their responsibilities and operations. AFDCBs act upon temporary off-limits restrictions issued by commanders as a first priority.

The Denver Police Department and Air Force Office of Special Investigation are investigating the Denver incident. Anyone with any information about the incident, including photos or video footage, should contact Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.

Chief Master Sgt. Stephen Ludwig, the Academy's command chief, cautioned Airmen to be aware of their surroundings when they go downtown.

"If you find yourself in a situation you're uncomfortable with, get yourself and your wingman out of harm's way," he said.

The chief also recommended Airmen check the local off-limits establishment list when they travel to a new base on permanent or temporary duty orders.
