Colorado Springs Colorado --
The Senate confirmed Lt. Col. Margaret Martin as the Air Force Academy's newest permanent professor March 3.
Earlier this year, Martin was nominated by President Barack Obama to become the permanent professor and head in the Air Force Academy’s Department of History.
Now that she has been confirmed, Martin will be promoted to the rank of colonel. She will begin her duties this summer, said Brig. Gen. Andrew Armacost, the Academy’s dean of the faculty.
Martin graduated from the Academy in 1996 with a bachelor’s of science in history and attended pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. She’s a command pilot with more than 3,100 flight hours and 320 combat hours flown in the Boeing C-17A Globemaster, a large military transport aircraft.
After serving at the Academy as a history assistant professor, Martin earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of North Carolina.
Martin is currently the commander of the 571st Mobility Support Advisory Training Squadron, Travis Air Force Base, Calif., where she leads one of two specialized Air Force squadron’s dedicated to building partner capacity.
All permanent professors at the Academy are selected from a pool of qualified candidates who compete for the position.
“Congratulations to Lt. Col. Martin and her family,” Armacost said when he learned Martin's nomination. “Lt. Col. Martin will be a welcome addition to our faculty. Her wide range of experience as an officer and her credentials as an educator, make her the perfect candidate to become the permanent professor and head of our Department of History.”
