U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. -- Civil engineers at the Air Force Academy are asking drivers to report potholes and road damage.
Repairs crews are trying to repair damage from last year, and these reports will help prioritize repair projects at the 10th Civil Engineer Squadron, said john Sutherland, a pavements, maintenance and heavy equipment operator.
Most of the road damage comes in the wake of Colorado’s weather conditions, Sutherland said.
“Roads and parking lots have large cracks that fill with moisture or water from snow melt and refreeze in the lower overnight temperatures,” he said. “When ice freezes, it expands -- usually causing damage. The same goes for the asphalt in the spring, with the daily freeze-thaw cycle, causing potholes.”
Along with a high level of traffic and heavy vehicles, the year’s unusually warm temperatures combine with the weather to create what Sutherland called a “perfect recipe for potholes.”
Call 333-2079 to report potholes or road damage. Sutherland asked callers to describe the area, the building number of any facility near the pothole or damage, and leave a phone number.
