Minority applications at Academy rise 36 percent

Applications to the U.S. Air Force Academy for the Class of 2014, both overall and in the number of minorities who have applied, have increased from the previous year.

The school has received 11,597 applications to date for the class of 2014. According to Larry Jones, acting director of admissions, this is 1,700 more applications than last year, or a 17.2-percent increase in applications.

Minority applications rose to 4,029, nearly 1,070 more than last year. This is a 36-percent increase.

A typical class at the Academy is 1,300 students.

The Air Force Academy has focused efforts over the last several years to reach out to minorities and individuals in areas of the country that are underrepresented at the Academy.
