Services

The U.S. Air Force Academy, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate provides legal assistance to Active Duty, Reserve and Guard on Title 10 Orders, Retirees, and Dependents. Legal assistance is limited to personal and civil matters, including estate planning, power of attorneys, and notaries. Our office does not assist in criminal matters or trusts. Please see Air Force Instruction, 51-304, Legal Assistance, Notary, Preventative Law, and Tax Programs, for further information on the scope of legal assistance and eligibility.

Estate Planning: Before scheduling an appointment for estate planning, you will need to complete the online worksheet through the Air Force Legal Assistance Website. The estate planning documents are located under the “Legal Worksheets” tab.

Upon completion of those documents, you will receive an 8-character "Ticket Number", which is case-sensitive, please retain the ticket number and contact our office to schedule an appointment.

*Please Note, we do not retain copies of any documents that are produced in our office, including wills*

Legal Assistance: All other legal assistance, such as divorce, child support, child custody, etc., are scheduled by appointment only.

Powers of Attorneys: You may complete a power of attorney on a walk-in basis Monday-Thursday from 0900-1500 and on Friday from 1200-1500. You can also use the Air Force Legal Assistance Website to create powers of attorney and provide the "Ticket Number" upon walk-in. Power of attorneys are located under the “Legal Worksheets” tab.

Notaries: You may walk in anytime during our regular business hours to have a notary provided.

Household Good Claims or Personal Property Claims: Please visit the Air Force Claims Service Center Website for a step-by-step online filing process. If you have any questions, please contact the Air Force Claims Service Center (AFCSC) at (937) 656-8044.

Tax Assistance (Active Duty): Free digital filing for active duty is available through Military One Source. Military One Source provides trained tax consultants available during the tax season at (800) 342-9647. For more information on tax software and support, please go to the Military OneSource Website.

Tax Assistance (Retirees): Free IRS Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free help based on income, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance preparing their tax returns. In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help to those 60 years of age and older. Trained VITA volunteers can address military-specific tax issues. To locate a VITA or TCE center near you please visit the IRS Website for free tax return preparation.

Self-Help Legal Assistance (Colorado): The Colorado Judicial Branch Website provides a Self-Help Center that can provide step-by-step guides or resources you can obtain depending on your need, such as divorce, child custody, or landlord-tenant issues, within the State of Colorado.
